How it works

Building a plan patients can follow

Long plans are easier to accept when the arithmetic is visible. List each procedure on its own line with its fee — including the tooth or site in the label, as the printout does — then show the subtotal, any discount the practice is offering, tax where it applies, and one clear total. This calculator produces exactly that summary.

Phasing is easy to show

For staged treatment, run the calculator once per phase and print each summary separately, or add all phases and note the phase in each procedure label ("Phase 1 — crown, tooth 36"). The patient sees the full picture and the per-visit picture at the same time.

Worked example

A plan with a $1,000 crown and a $500 filling, a 10% courtesy discount, and 8% tax where applicable: subtotal $1,500; discount −$150 leaves $1,350; tax of 8% adds $108; total $1,458.

With no discount and no tax — the common case where dental care is tax-exempt — the total is simply the subtotal of the fees listed.

Frequently asked questions

In what order are discount and tax applied?

The discount comes off the subtotal first, and tax is then calculated on the discounted amount. Discounting first is both the usual commercial practice and slightly better for the patient.

Should dental treatment be taxed at all?

In many places dental services are exempt from sales tax, while a few jurisdictions tax certain products or cosmetic procedures. Leave tax at 0% unless your local rules require it — the field is there for clinics that need it.

Can I give the patient a copy?

Yes — use the Print summary button (or your browser's print to PDF) after calculating. The printout shows the itemised fees, discount, tax, and total without the website's navigation.

Does the plan stay saved?

No — deliberately. The plan exists only in this browser tab and disappears when the page closes, so no patient-linked fee information is kept anywhere.
