How it works

Recall runs on calendar months, not day counts

Six months after 15 January is 15 July — not "about 182 days later". This calculator adds true calendar months, clamping safely at month ends, and tells you how far away the due date is from today (or how overdue a patient already is). Front-desk teams use it when rebooking at checkout and when working through a lapsed-patient list.

Choosing the interval

The interval is a clinical decision: periodontal maintenance patients commonly return at 3 months, average-risk patients at 6, and low-risk patients at 9–12. The calculator simply applies whichever interval you select, consistently, for every patient on the list.

Worked example

Last visit 15 January 2026, standard 6-month recall: the next due date is 15 July 2026.

Last visit 31 January 2026, 3-month periodontal interval: January 31 plus 3 months would be "April 31", which does not exist — the calculator lands on 30 April 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Why do recall intervals differ between patients?

Six months is the traditional default, but interval should follow risk: patients on periodontal maintenance are often seen every 3 months, high-caries-risk patients every 3-4 months, and low-risk adults with stable mouths may safely stretch to 9-12 months.

What does the calculator do with month-end dates?

It clamps to the end of the target month. A visit on January 31 with a 3-month interval gives April 30, and August 31 plus 6 months gives February 28 (or 29 in a leap year) — never an invalid date.

Is a 6-month check-up evidence-based for everyone?

Reviews of recall research find no single interval suits all adults, which is why risk-based recall (for example the NICE guidance in the UK) is increasingly recommended. Use the interval your clinical assessment sets for that patient; this tool just does the calendar math.
